US women’s figure skating star Alysa Liu had to return one of her gold medals from the Winter Olympics.
Liu, 20, won both the team and individual events in Italy, standing at the top of the podium twice.
But a mishap whilst celebrating meant she had to give one broken medal back.
Liu, who was overcome with emotion after being given her second gold, explained: “I was just jumping up and down, as one does to celebrate, and it just dropped.
“It just literally fell off of the ribbon. It got very scratched up pretty dented.”
Despite picking it up and being a fan of having a different medal, Liu was not allowed to keep it as a unique souvenir.
She continued: “I actually liked it when it was off the ribbon, but that’s not allowed.
“I had to give it in. I was like: ‘Can’t you just fix this one? I’m attached.’
“But it’s ok, I’m detached. Just like it was.”
Liu became a big attraction at the skating with flary outfits including her (appropriate) sparkly gold one for the individual performance.
At the end of her 226.79-worthy effort, Liu bowed and went up to the camera before shouting: “That’s what I’m f***ing talking about!”
She went on to say in an interview: “My family is out there, my friends are out there.
“I had to put on a show for them.
“When I see other people smiling, because I see them in the audience, I have to smile, too. I have no poker face.”
Liu was the first American to win the individual event in over 20 years.
That is all the more remarkable after she retired from the sport as a teen.
Liu competed at the Beijing games in 2022 but finished sixth.
As a youngster, that hit her hard and saw her hang up the skates.
In 2024 she opened up on the decision, saying: “I was so into skating that I really didn’t do much else.
“Skating takes up your whole life, almost.
“I don’t know if other people kind of feel the same when they look back at certain parts of their life.
“But for me, it’s definitely a blur, because it kind of meshes together, you know – going to the rink, going home, competing.”
She spent two years away and got back to action before completing a remarkable turnaround at Milan-Cortina.
